they're here! calling all chicken advice-givers!

we have fowl! my mom came by with 20 chickens! i told her several times we only need 4!! she just came over and kept throwing in one chicken after another in the pen and now we have 9 chickens. they are the typical chicken farm chicken and about 6-8 weeks old (we're guessing). we don't know if they are all females or not. they have sparse feathering and kinda stink. but they still make those cute chickie peeping noises.

they're pretty scared, too. they are warming up to being in there, and to me a little bit too. they have not gone inside the nesting box, partly because we haven't put in an adequate ramp yet (working on that now). i put some mixed grain and fresh water in there, and some hay and sand. they seem to be happy, pecking away at bugs. they poop. it's gross. our eggs are coming out of that same hole. ew. but, it will be a while before we get any eggs. i'm thinking we are going to fatten them up and start eating the big ones and let the smaller ones grow and lay eggs.

the dogs were excited. choco is a bit intimidated but curious. i don't think moto is aware of the new roommates he's got. and i'm a little paranoid about our neighbors protesting...

we let the dogs come out and sniff around the pen. louie knows chicken tastes good. they are hiding under the nesting box right now. i was wondering if we can give the chickens baths? they are white and covered in poo. if you know anything about chickens, leave me some pointers, i could use it!

I dont what to tell you with that, other than putting some kind of saw dust in there because chickens like to take dust baths.
but here is a site where you can get some good advice.

Your mom sounds like my dad. When I told him once I wanted a polaroid one step {back in the age of dinasaurs. He brings home a fully loaded all manual pentax 35 mm with lense attachments. It was more than I was ready for with my poor eyes and luddite disposition.

She sounds really sweet. Now its time to call her up and have her help you with your Mongolian Horde of Poultry.

haha, that's exactly what they are, a suburban mongolian horde of poultry! i think i will give them (what remains after the first slaughter) names from the deep south, or maybe based off of Gone With the Wind...

We have 4 chickens we got as full grown last year. They are a delight. We have a mini schnauzer and he is scared of them. They attacked him once when he got too close for comfort. I know dogs are able to actually guard them and do very well with them though. We let them free range and then feed them feed and veggie and fruit scraps and water. They love dust baths yes and scratching around looking for bugs. They are so fun to watch! :)Good Luck!

What, 20 chickens, that's no where near 4!?!? Are they noisy? Is Louis still sitting in front of the coop waiting for them to come out? He's such a funny dog.

the coop looks really nice!
Are you going to kill them yourself before eating them???
let me know if they're delicious!!!

We have 19 chickens but they are still juveniles. Many are still in the last stages of molt from their chick fluff. They arent that noisey but I think the operative word is [yet]. By the looks of it, we have at least 2 cockerals in there, maybe more. That will be interesting. And then of course 1 Thom Turkey, and 2 wild Turkey hen-poults.

The coop looks like the Mother Earth News plans? I was eye balling that. But what I really want is a chicken tractor. I may have to win the lottery first before that happens.

yeah, i think that's what our chickens are - juveniles. they are losing their fluff and getting better feathers. ours aren't noisy yet, either. they mostly peep, with an occasional bbwwack! i think we might have up to 3 roosters, and unfortunately for them, they are the biggest ones. but we'll see. i like these little guys, they are entertaining. i think johnny actually bought the plans for the coop off of ebay, but i originally found them through mother earth news (yes, i have a subscription to their newsletter). we just got it cause we had no clue what chickens required in a house but now that we know, i can totally design way better coops. we already improved this one by just re-arranging where the hinges are and putting in some strategic handles. if you need a design, i would be happy to make one for you! what's a chicken tractor? maybe i can design one of those, too.

Chicken Tractors are chicken coops built on two wheeled trailors that can be pulled around and moved with a portable fence. Giving the chickens access to new area, but still keeping them enclosed if you choose.

Right now money is an issue. So I dont think I will be doing that one any time soon. I am looking at using pallet wood.

I love Mother Earth News. I used to subscribe but let it fall because I was doing other stuff.
