observations on poultry

well, i've spent some quality time with my birds and so far i have noticed these things:

  1. we have way too many chickens.

  2. they all pretty much look alike.

  3. the only differences is size, and we have 3 big ones, 1 medium, and 4 small.

  4. they really prefer their chicken feed over strawberries and apples.

  5. they don't trust me.

  6. they stink, and they poop anywhere and everywhere.

  7. i think we have roosters in the mix.

  8. they are pretty stupid. we had to put them in their henhouse at night.

  9. they are warm, slightly squishy and soft.

  10. they like to boss each other around.

  11. they fluff up when they sit down to sleep.

  12. i think they can fly.

Our chickens can fly. So can our Turkeys. If you want to fix that problem, clip one wing {according to older more experienced neighbor}otherwise two equally clipped wings according to her, are the same as unclipped wings.

Anyhow, they are pretty stinky, and they do poop just where ever regardless of what you might think or desire.

I thought it was odd that you bought adults. I suppose that other hand raised chickens might be friendlier, but if you want to be sure they are handled easier, its best to get chicks and raise them.

You can order from different hatcheries and even have only pullets sent so you dont get noisy bossy roosters if you dont want them. If you go to a farm and ranch supply to buy chicks, ask them if they have pullets. Because if the chicks havent been sexed by an expert in Chicken Gender Identification, then you get what you get. Dont ask me how they do it, because they all look the same to me.

Small Chicken breeds are usually Bantams. Any chicken breed can be made a Bantam version. Its like the toy version of standard dog breeds. Most people get them strictly for pets, show or bug control.

Other breeds vary with size, temperment, broodiness {motherly instincts} egg color. You can go to this Hatchery site to try and identify what you kind of chicken you have.
Good luck.

actually, i originally wanted to get day old chicks from mcmurray's (had the order form filled out and everything - i was going to get the mixed special) but then my mom told me not to buy any and that she could get some for me. i know that's always a bad idea, but then i thought i should practice raising chickens before i spent too much money and attachment on the pretty birds. i actually like these chickens - they are kind of cute. and they are warming up to me fast. i really want bantam pullets of silver laced wyandottes, red specklady, araucanas, and buff orpingtons. there are some really pretty chickens out there!

Weezy! You crazy nut.

BAT-SHIT-Crazy!

LOL. Definitely onto something there.

Personally I am looking forward to the cockadoodle doos. Because, we have teenagers out here who serenade us with their megaboom base crap. I think the roosters will make a lovely annoying countersong to that.

{rubs hands together in maniacal glee}
tee hee.
